Gentleman’s Magazine 1731-1868

Society of Genealogists

 

The Gentleman’s magazine was a monthly publication. It is bound in annual volumes until 1821 when it is bound in half-yearly volumes. Page numbering is continuous throughout each volume. After 1821 (and in 1815 which is an exception), the volume number is indicated “v1/v2”. Each volume is indexed by surname. The following is a full extract of all indexed entries. The volumes for 1743, 1861/2 and 1865/2 are missing from the SoG collection. 1855/2 is unindexed. The series runs to and including 1868/1.

1805 page 174             23 Jan 1805, A stage coach was overturned while going down Monkdale Hill between Buxton and Sheffield owing to the road being covered with ice by which accident Mr. MARSDEN, tailor of Sheffield was killed on the spot. Six inside passengers, however, and the coachman escaped unhurt

1830 v1 page 368        Domestic occurrences - 10 Feb 1830. Judgement was given to the following effect in the Court of the King’s Bench against ALEXANDER, MARSDEN and ISAACSON for a series of libels in the Morning Journal (see December Magazine, page 556). That upon each of the three indictments, Mr. ALEXANDER be imprisoned in Newgate for four calendar months and pay a fine of 300L and give security for his good behaviour for three years. Mr, ISAACSON to pay a fine of 100L, Mr. MARSDEN to give security for his good behaviour for three years himself in 100L and two sureities of 50L each.Mr. GUTCH had been previously discharged on his own recognizances.

1867 v1 page 265        Died - 16 Jan aged 70 Dr. MARSDEN of 65 Lincolns Inn Fields, London. His name is identified with the foundation of the Royal Free Hospital and the Cancer Hospital. He was born in 1796 and was a MRCS in 1828. Graduated MD at Erlangen 1838, was a member of the Royal Institution, Senior Surgeon to the Royal Free Hospital, Principal Surgeon to the Cancer Hospital, London & West Brompton and medical referee to the Defence Assurance Office. He was author of a work on “Malignant Cholera”.
