OVERSEAS SOURCES

The British have always been inclined to migrate to other parts of the world and the Marsdens are no exception. There is a suggestion that a Marsden was present in the Jamestown settlement in America as early as 1610 and several references to Marsdens in the Americas during the 17th century. Reverend Samuel Marsden, the second chaplain to the penal colony of New South Wales was, I believe the first Marsden in Australia (though was soon followed by several less voluntary emigrants) and subsequently the first in New Zealand. The depressed economic conditions in the early 19th century led to a flood of emigrants to Britain's colonies and to the recently independent United States. Marsdens feature strongly in this migration, perhaps because the name is concentrated in the Northern counties and it was from here that so many emigrants came.

There is a considerable quantity of information relating to Marsdens overseas and the Archive has only a small part of this. Contributions to this section of the Archive will be particularly warmly welcomed.

The abbreviations are pretty obvious: AUS = Australia; CAN = Canada; NZ = New Zealand; RSA = Republic of South Africa and USA = United States of America (including pre-revolutionary settlements)
