The Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) was the senior probate court in Great Britain until civil probate registries were introduced from 11 January 1858. The PCC claimed jurisdiction over estates which involved property in both of the ecclesiastical provinces of York and Canterbury but estates with property in just one province could be proved at the PCC at the choice of the executors. The PCC also claimed jurisdiction over the estates of British persons who died overseas. This index is incomplete. Dates covered are as below. The index includes references both to MARSDEN and MARSTON testators. The wills are deposited at the Public Record Office, Kew, London in Class PROB 12. It is necessary to consult the index in PROB 11 to obtain the piece number for the reference given.
