School and University records can be particularly useful. They will often not only name the student and give his dates of attendance but will frequently name parents and other family (especially if the latter have attended the same establishment). It is also possible that the document will detail the student's later life and achievements and indicate the date of death. Some, such as Alumni Oxoniensis and Cantabrigiensis, will provide references to other sources from which the details have been taken.
Mostly it will be Public (in the UK sense - ie private in the USA sense) schools which feature though a few of the records relate to more modest establishments since these have frequently been published. Local state school records are mostly (where they survive) deposited in record offices local to the school. The records below are arranged on a county basis.
